The vanillin in Lavanille may cause it to discolor animal hair shaving brushes. Use of a dedicated brush or a synthetic-fiber shaving brush is recommended.

Some time ago, Barrister and Mann® had the extraordinary fortune to obtain a sample of the discontinued, leathery perfume base Mousse de Saxe. Armed with only this small sample and historical records of what went into the original, we set out to re-create the famous design by smell alone. After four months of research, formulation, reformulation, and constant refinement, we successfully rebuilt Mousse de Saxe into its original glory. It seemed only fitting that such an achievement should be used to create a soap inspired by some of the greatest masculine fragrances of all time.

We blend our version of Mousse de Saxe with lavender, vanilla, cedar, and elegant musk to create a dark, leathery, elegant soap unlike anything seen for nearly a half century.

Net wt. 4 oz, Made in the USA

Wet your shaving brush well, then swirl it around the jar for roughly thirty seconds or until a rich, creamy lather is formed. Continue building the lather by adding water (lots and lots of it) and swirling your brush either on your face or in a lathering bowl. Shave, rinse, and spend your day feeling great.

Customers praised this shaving soap for its "terrific lather" and "slick" performance with excellent post-shave feel. The complex scent combines vanilla, lavender, and leather notes described as "dark and warm." Most loved the fragrance, though some found it weaker than expected or too earthy. The dark brown color may stain natural brushes.

Fantastic!

I have used shaving soaps and creams for 20 years trying dozens of different producers, but just discovered Barrister and Mann through my local Norwegian supplier Barbershop.no. My first purchase was the Lavanille soap and aftershave balm. I got blown away, what a fantastic smell, just so complex, deep and fascinating. The quality of the lather and balm is also on another level. Thank you for producing such outstanding products. Now I’m addicted and have bought everything available in Norway and looking forward to every shave like never before. Please keep the Lavanille for the future! Greetings from Norway!

Perfection

It’s a wonderful, complex scent that has been masterfully done by Barrister and Mann. The slickness and performance of the soap is right along with the quality of the scent. Top notch!

I am disappointed in the fragrance

I am disappointed in the fragrance. I'm using Waves shave soap now and enjoy a hearty fragrance. I expected Lavanille to be equal in strength of fragrance. It is not.

This smells fantastic! I bought for my husband

This smells fantastic! I bought for my husband. He loves it too. I also bought full measure of a man soap. I so wish you'd bring that back as a shaving soap. We both loved its scent.

An easy 10 out of 10

The lather is terrific and the post-shave feel is second to none. The scent is also very unique as well. Perfect for the wintertime.

My all-time favorite.

My all-time favorite, back in a full size. It's hard to describe the scent any better than they already have, but: if you like something a little dark and a little sweet (the vanila notes jump out at me most, but the dsrk/leathery base is unmistakable). The soap itself gives a fantastic shave. Grab this while you can.

La Vanille - Stellar

I have to admit, when I first got this tub of soap I disliked the scent. I left it in a drawer - knowing I shouldn't give up so quick. I waited and used it a couple months later and I have found I am in love with it. The scent definitely had to grow on me but it is really fantastic. Goes without saying the soap is great, all-around for shaving.

Best shaving soap I've tried

Love this shaving soap. Smells great. Nice, thick lather. As a head shaver, the back of my neck is sensitive and prone getting raw after shaving. Lavanille shaving soap has really alleviated this issue for me. I will be a lifetime customer!

Amazing!

Love the B&M shaving soaps. Get a very smooth, refreshing shave every time. Lavanille is my favorite scent, period. I have the shaving soap, regular soap, and aftershave. Can’t get enough!

A Beautiful Soap

Elegance abounds. I love trying B&M’s products and finding scents that I never would have experienced or known about otherwise. It’s not just a scent, it’s experiencing a history of the make up of the scent. The soap opens up in the lather and is warm and strong, but not overpowering. The dry-down for me is where it’s really at though, it mellows and the undertones open up to something elegant and light but warm. Both vanilla and lavender are present but not overpowering, which is amazing since both generally seem to always be so strong as a scent in products. The Mousse de Saxe’s earthiness is also well balanced to these other notes.

This soap gets better each time I use it. The more accustomed I get to the notes, the more layers I find and the more alluring it becomes.

It is subtle refinement and confidence in a tub.

Love the scent... and B&M's support

After trying the fabulous Seville line reading several intriguing reviews of Lavanille, I purchased a tub on Amazon. To my surprise, I had a tough time getting a good lather with this one, as opposed to Seville, which makes the best lather effortlessly. I reached out to B&M's customer service to inquire if I needed to make a change in my technique with my boar brush, and Will immediately offered to send me a tub from a brand-new batch. The new one produces an even better lather than my Seville soap, and of course, it has that mysterious, manly scent. I added the splash to compliment it. What a fantastic company that supports its products! I am hooked!

Another B&M Success

Much like the other soaps I've tried from B&M this one did not disappoint. The scent gives off a subtle sophistication and isn't overbearing or too strong. This is the closest I've come to enjoying a soap more than the limited sandlewood run that was done a few years prior. This is an essential must buy

My year round fragrance

The vanilla and lavender both show up in La Vanille but neither are overpowering or come off as feminine. The vanilla is warm and even a little earthy and following up with the aftershave splash is the way to go. I think you could safely use La Vanille year round. The shave performance is also obviously top notch.

This is some good stuff

I got to say I'm very impressed with the slickness and the smell is fantastic.

An intoxicatingly interesting scent. Not quite sure I can put my finger on exactly what mousse de saxe smells like, but it is darkly elegant as the description states. As always, wonderful to lather up.

Solid soap

The lather is what you’d come to expect from B&M. The scent is almost like a vanilla leather blended with lavender and moss. It’s what I wanted “Full measure of man” to be.

One of my favorite shaving soap manufacturers. It has a very pleasant scent and produces a phenomenal amount of lather. I highly recommend it.

Great lather

This aftershave creates a great lather for a smooth shave. Leather seems the most dominant scent. I wish I smelled more vanilla and lavender which make up the lavanille scent.

Lavanille

Think of lavender married with vanilla. This scent can be a lot of fun but the soap is very dark in color so be careful using animal hair with this one. I like this soap for what it is. It’s not going to replace my Seville anytime soon but it’s a keeper

Wonderful scent, wonderful shave

Just letting it dry out serves as a good air freshener, and the razor just glides across the face with this. Would buy again!

Lavanille=Perfection.

I visited my local shaving supplies shop looking for a new shop . I picked this one up because of its smell . Love at first sight . In general I’m struggling with irritations etc , I’ve tried many soaps in the past classic for sensitive skins and modern and I was always using allum blocks and preshave , sometimes even hot towels on my own . With lavanille I’m just shaving and the use it’s balm and that’s is, I can’t believe it my skin is as clear as ever + the amazing smell , also the after shave lasts for hours ! I can’t recommend it more it’s the best product I’ve ever used I’m gonna get more of your scents ! Never stop making it please

Poor lather

I’ve been wet shaving for 10 years and this is the worst lather I’ve ever had. I go this for Christmas and was looking forward to it as this was on my wish list. I tried working up a lather for 30 minutes trying all kinds of different water ratios. I understand that there are different bases to their product lines, and that should be clearly advertised with the benefits of the different based and how to use them. The best I could work this lather into was runny mud water. I watched a video on YouTube and read the Q&A. Both said the soap needs a lot of water. I used A LOT of water. I would swirl in the bowl for 30 seconds and then transfer to a scuttle. I would then gradually add water but it never bloomed.

Hi Jo! My apologies for not seeing this sooner; it didn't show up in the queue for some reason! I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble, but I shot a lather demo awhile back that should be able to help you out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B_dsK0HxBoLrqsUbx39nffyj9tCtRZmr/view

Please let us know if you're still having trouble. Thank you!

Great smell not so great at lathering

I love the smell and pair this up with the matching aftershave splash but I have some difficulty getting a good lather going compared to other B&M soaps I've tried like the limited edition sandlewood which was extremely easy to lather up. Really my only complaint the soap is solid and I'll continue buying from B&M

Hi Alex! Could you respond to this email and give us an idea on what your lathering technique is like? Happy to give you a hand. :)
