What We Do
Barrister and Mann is proud to manufacture some of the finest traditional grooming products to be found anywhere. We specialize in shaving soaps, aftershaves, and personal fragrances for the modern man.
Why We Do It
Canned shaving foam isn't good for your face. Propellants and sulfate detergents can strip your skin of its natural oils, but a proper shaving soap helps preserve the moisture barrier and provides more protection from the blade.
Let customers speak for us
from 7758 reviewsI love the scent of the shaving soaps but they don't last all day so I decided to try the aftershave balm to lengthen the aromatic experience. Wow, was I right! Not only do they smell great and last all day, they make my face feel like silk. The Muir(e) Wood scent is a wonderful earthy fragrance with just the right hint of blackberry to offset the mossy undertones. It makes me want to get out in nature all day long!
I am very pleased to have found your Unscented Balm. For years I've used Truefitt and Hill's Classic Aftershave Balm which was their version of an unscented balm, but, they stopped making it a year or two ago and I've been working on my last bottle. Your soaps have all been fine shaving products (Seville is in my regular rotation), so I decided to give your Unscented Balm a shot. Its superb. No alcohol sting. No scent getting in the way. Very soothing on the face. Very clean. Ideal. One small favor, if you please... Don't stop making it, or, if you do decide to stop making it, please let me know so I can stock up.
This is my second BM soap. As a shaving soap, it is far and away the best I've had. I'm still not sure what to do with my remaining Taylor of Old Bond Street cream since I no longer want to return to it!
As a scent, i think spice might be my favorite of BMs staples. It is really reminiscent of the classic old spice i knew as a kid, and is similar to the old Indian formulation of the brand. But it also has a uniquely spicy feel of its own. The newer OS formulations have become much sweeter whereas this has an almost earthy feel that is much more grounded. Cannot recommend enough.
It's a unique and classy scent in a nice soap bar. You know how some scented soaps smell cheap? Not this one. The scent has the complexity and depth of a nice perfume. Makes me think of a classy gent in a well-fitting uniform stepping out of a historical novel.
This is, far and away, the best perfume in my cupboard. Its amazing how complex and layered it is. When I read the scent notes I thought it must be too much. Too confusing. Too many different scents. But nope. They complement each other perfectly. You get an amazingly complex fragrance that evolves amazingly over time. It evokes something slightly dark, slightly spicy, but also something nostalgic. It makes me feel as if I'm in transitioning from a wonderful field to a museum filled with memories and then finally to somewhere familiar but comfortable, wherever it might be. This really is my top scent and it takes a fair bit of willpower to make sure I use it sparingly and for special occasions.
Ok, so I have tried Leviathan, which I love, Le Grand Chypre, Lavender, Cool, Death, War, Full Measure of Man, Bay Rum, and Chesire. This is the third tub of Seville. Of course the performance is best in class, it's Barrister and Mann. The scent is my favorite, great anytime of year and is neither to strong or too faint. I will never be without a tub of Seville. Cheshire is my second favorite, it's amazing. A little spicy, but in a good way. Leviathan is also top notch but not always available. If you have not tried this soap, do it now. Best cushion, glide and post shave feel is wonderful.
Le Grand Chypre is bright off of the tub with a citrus and floral blend that is lightly sweet and extremely pleasant to my nose. There are so many different notes that swirl together from whiffs off the tub, but when lathering begins, these begin to break down into an herbal melange. The remaining scent is a subtle blend of spice, resinous powder, and citrus. This end note is accentuated and extended by use of the aftershave, with plenty of longevity to last. What I find most interesting is that Le Grande Chypre is spicy, but in a “summery” way. Spice is usually accompanied by heavy, dark notes fitting for colder months, but in this case B&M have managed to combine bright citrus and subtle spice notes with an herbal patchouli in an entirely balanced way. It’s a truly fascinating take on the Chypre-genre, and it is my favorite Chypres scent. It is an all-season soap, but definitely a spring and summer favorite for me.
I missed out on the original release of Passiflora for a few years back, but I guess good things come to those who wait...or is it miss out? The Omnibus soap base has to be the best in the business! It does not take much loading, this soap has excellent slickness and as I said a little goes a long way! This is a fruit forward scent, but I absolutely love it! This is definitely a date night fragrance and will mainly use it as such. This is a great addition to anyone's shave den!
I bought the sample size a year ago after trying the soap and splash and I loved it. It's easily in my top 3 of any smell and, honestly, competes constantly for that #1 spot in my mind. Desert island, only having one smell, etc. however you want to percieve how amazing this is, it'd be true. I was elated when the bottles came in for Will to resume producing this and I leaped at the opportunity to have the full size EdP. It's treasured greatly and I'm beyond thankful for it. I couldn't live without it now that I've had it. It is, undoubtedly, bottled perfection.
My wife will sometimes hover in the morning, while I’m trying to shave (she gets a kick out of it or something...). One morning, she noticed that I had a particularly rough shave. I have pretty sensitive skin and often go a little aggressive on my shaves. About 3-5 minutes after applying this fantastic aftershave, all razor irritation was completely gone. My wife now thinks that this particular aftershave is magic (or at least, a miracle worker if it gets her husband to look a little more presentable). She also thinks it’s my signature scent. Like a lot of folks here, I love a great bay rum scent, and this one is magnificent.
