Description

Barrister and Mann is proud to present Beaudelaire, a marriage of long-standing fougère methodology with the dusky, leathery, decadent charm of our famous re-creation of Mousse de Saxe. We blend the classic fougère accord of lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin with ylang ylang, rose, sandalwood, and the deep, richly bitter character of Mousse de Saxe to produce a fougère of singular elegance and distinction.

Dark, soapy, and incomparably sexy, Beaudelaire is a fragrance that symbolizes elegant debauchery in all of the best ways. Were Oscar Wilde alive today, this would be his signature.

Beaudelaire

Beaudelaire is one of my top two or three scents in all of wetshaving, and Barrister and Mann is easily in my top two vendors in performance. I saw that this could be the last run of Beaudelaire (please say it ain't so!) so I had to stock up. The scent is so unique, with the strong dank smell of the Mousse de Saxe blended perfectly with whatever other magic is in there to give it a hint of sweetness. I swear I think I smell vanilla but I don't see that in the scent notes so maybe it's just the oakmoss. Whatever it is, it's wonderful and there's nothing else like it. I purchased the soap and the aftershave splash, and the performance of both is top notch.

Simply splendid

Mousse De Saxe turns a fougere accord in to a darker, more herbaceous form of itself. Scents of fresh greens and powder dim down to dried florals and herbs, with a slight ghostly wail of what they once were. There’s a bit of a high quality aged Hei Cha presence in this, something reminiscent of crisp autumn leaves and a deep camphorous stickiness. Warm, dank leather and a wood-paneled room for brooding come to mind as well. You end up with a scent that really is a “dark fougere”. The way these leathery notes change the other tones reminds me in concept only of Leviathan, while the smell itself reminds me of a herbal-forward, tobacco-free form of “The Full Measure of Man”. It fulfills a niche that has gone unsatiated for me; the winter fougere. This is what i picture the inside of a plague doctor’s mask to smell like. The leather of the mask with herbs and flowers packed in to it.

This is it, folks...

Beaudelaire is the scent that got me into wet shaving. It's not for everyone, I'll admit, but it is now and forever shall be a favorite. Will has said this may be the last production run, so this may be your last chance to try something truly spectacular. As long as I can manage it, there will always be Beaudelaire in my shave den, and I will always love it.
