Children’s authors, people like Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and Beatrix Potter, set the tone for our entire lives. The books that we read as children become cornerstones of how we see the world, of our beliefs about right and wrong, and of how we treat others. Few could forget the lessons and lines of iconic works like The Lorax, and we pass such lessons on to our own children in an effort to give them the best for their own childhoods.
This year, for what would have been Dr. Seuss’s 118th birthday, Barrister and Mann is thrilled to revive our tribute to these great authors, to the Eric Carles and Richard Scarrys and Maurice Sendaks of the world. Inspired by their stories and their lessons, Behold the Whatsis! is a sprightly, Spring-like blend of grapefruit, rose, and our own version of the smell of childhood memories, a combination of tangerines, sugar cookies, and dryer-warm blankets. Far from cloyingly sweet, Behold the Whatsis! elegantly and quietly hails back to what it’s like to be very small.
In further celebration of children’s literature, we will also be donating $1 per jar of soap and $2 per bottle of aftershave splash or balm sold to the Children’s Literacy Initiative, a renowned non-profit that works with teachers to advance and improve early literacy in the United States.
Special thanks to Jennifer Davis and Wendy Guenther, who created their very own tributes to Dr. Seuss’s unique artistic style, and to the good doctor himself. There was no one on Earth who was youer than you.

My favorite scent so far
I really love the scent of Whatsis. I like to shave in the evening so it’s a nice soft scent for bedtime.

One of the best!
This might be my all time favorite B&M scent, and the three wait in between releases was agony. Made sure to stock up this time.

Superb scent
I only bought the splash, too many soaps to deal with! But, as with all B and M products, first class. Thoughtful, complex, well-designed scent. Grapefruit is what I smell most along with the more organic combination of "memories." This will be a big go-to for me this spring and summer. I've looked for a perfect grapefruit based soap and this is it for me. The base is great as well. So glad I added it to my collection.

Incredible Citrus
I bought this soap alongside Will’s Sandalwood release expecting this one to take a back seat to that when to my surprise, I think I found a new favorite. Will is a master when it comes to citrus and this soap is no exception. What I often find with fruit-forward scents is a lingering sweetness which is too sharp up front and sours over time. Like Nordost before it, this truly captures the essence of citrus instead of just slapping you with a sticker cookie cutter scent. It’s truly delightful, fresh, and pleasing to the nose. Lather is top notch as always.

Happy shaves
I really enjoy Wills spring takes on his reading campaign. The scent is great. Another of his that I enjoy. His bases are top notch and the omnibus is awesome. Here’s the big but: This soap is way too soft. Not in a this is how the soap is created but in a this was just poured and didn’t cure before sending it out. Just touching the surface leaves indents on the soap. Make sure you either scoop out of the jar or use the softest brush you have and go gently and you will have a great shave. Scent and shave easily 5 stars
Barrister and Mann
Hi Chad, To be clear, the soap is soft due to an interaction between the base and the fragrance, which is common with soaps that possess large amounts of citrus terpenes (as Behold the Whatsis does). It is not due to a lack of cure time. :)
