Clusterfig Shaving Soap (Excelsior)
Clusterfig is a seasonal scent for Autumn and will be discontinued on December 31st.
“To eat figs off the tree in the very early morning, when they have been barely touched by the sun, is one of the exquisite pleasures of the Mediterranean.”
― Elizabeth David, An Omelette and a Glass of Wine
Known the world over for its fresh, delicate, floral aroma and lushly succulent flavor, the fig is one of the great hand-me-downs of antiquity, a relic of our ancestors long considered one of life’s great delights. Despite its popularity in cuisine, fig has only recently entered the world of fragrance, with the first “true fig” (Diptyque's Philosykos, according to famed perfume critic Luca Turin) released in 1996. Several fig soaps have made it to market in recent years, but many of them tend to be sharp and tangy or rich and spicy, with little variation between. We at Barrister and Mann thought that it was high time to change that.
Clusterfig is a soft, evanescent blend of green fig, orange blossom, jasmine, amber (the old-school benzoin/labdanum/vanilla version), lemon, apple, and violet. Sweet and floral without being heavy, delicate without being overtly feminine, we consider it one of the best figs out there, and we’re very excited to bring it to you this Autumn. Clusterfig may be a bit of a different take on the cooler months, but that’s what makes it all the more special.

Fresh & Soft
First, I wanted to see if the Excelsior base is consistent across different varieties. It is. Excellent performance in this soap. Second, I was intrigued by the scent description. I was looking for a good fall soap. I really like Clusterfig. It is a “soft” scent, very clean. I get a little bit of baby powder, combined with a citrus touch, and a final slight floral note. It is very fresh. I will say I don’t necessarily get fall from this scent - but who cares. It’s a unique and pleasant one.
It grew on me...
Not gonna lie, this was not my favorite B&M scent at first. It hits you awfully strong off the puck, but give it some time to air out and the subtle fruit notes start to separate and come out. While light and airy, it lingers for a nice long time. It doesn't speak "autumn" to me though; more like spring. It's a fresh and fruity scent that made me think of sunny days and warming temperatures.
Cluster Fig is nice!
Another great one from B&M! Cluster Fig could be used all year, but works well for late summer and fall. Shows 4 stars; I never give 5 star reviews. (Personal thing.)
Right at the top in all performance areas.
