Eigengrau Aftershave Balm

In 2003, the House of Malle released one of its strangest, most ethereal creations: L'Eau d'Hiver, the smell of sunlight on snow. Characterized by perfumer Jean-Claude  Ellena's artful use of powdery heliotrope and iris and accented by white musks, honey, and flowers, it was heralded at the time as one of the  most artistically elegant creations of the time.

In the years since, no one else seems to have attempted any variations on the idea. L'Eau d'Hiver has stood alone as the most pure expression of the smell of Winter ever devised, and its bright, chipper nature and refined French pedigree tend to give the wearer an impression of sunlit ski slopes and thick woolen sweaters.

But that was then. And there are places in the world where Winter is a decidedly less cheerful affair.

Eigengrau is meant to be the inverse of L'Eau d'Hiver, the smell of moonlight  on snow. The very essence of the desolate elegance of a frigid  mountainside, framed by pristine snow and forbidding pines, so isolated  that you feel as though you stand at the edge of the world. Notes of heliotrope and iris bring forth the smell of desiccated powder, underlaid with the smell of frigid air and primeval accents of lichen, moss, vetiver, and fir needle. A vivid rendering of one of the most  starkly bewitching sights that the North has to offer, Eigengrau is a reminder that in the dark and the bleak may be found some of the most enrapturing beauty of all.

People have been asking us for ages why we don’t make an aftershave balm and, the truth is, we just hadn’t been able to come up with something that we really liked. Over the years, we’ve tried bunches of different formulas, refining the design over and over to produce something truly special: a balm that’s light, non-greasy, moisturizing, and very soothing.

After an unbelievable number of trials, Barrister and Mann® is proud to present our finished aftershave balm formula! Enriched with jojoba oil, kokum butter, hyaluronic acid, radish oil, allantoin, and a suite of botanicals to leave your skin feeling great, this balm is light and nourishing and will leave your skin feeling calm, soft, and supple all day long.

A good compliment to the soap

So, when I got the balm and opened it, I noticed that it was not the same scent as the Eigengrau soap. Where the soap had more of a chill edge to the scent, that reminded me of snowfall, the balm had heavy moss tones for me. When you add the two together, I am reminded of the winters I grew up with in Washington, hiking up mountains weaving through the crisp, mossy woods, snow and ice crunching underfoot. I have to say, I am a HUGE fan. The balm itself seemed to do a great job of remoisturizing my skin, leaving it feeling soft and refreshed. I hadn't shaved in a while, and was a little more aggressive on my neck than normal. I was thrilled to find that I had no razorburn afterwards, as that flares up, especially when I shave aggressively. Overall, while I found that this scent wasn't the same as the soap, I believe the balm compliments the soap extremely well. They share many of the same tones, but I really felt the soap was snow scent first, and the balm was more prominent with it's moss scent. But, then again, I am a sucker for clean moss scents. If you aren't, you may not enjoy this balm as much as I do. However, I have to say I am very impressed with the balm overall. It was my first of B+Ms, and I am definitely getting more in the future.

Great balm Nice scent

I really like B&M's aftershave balm. It is very soothing and nourishing for my skin post shave. The Eigengrau scent is nice and spot on described as moonlight on snow. The first time that I wore it, my daughter came in after shoveling snow and Eigengrau's scent had properties similar to what she smelled like after being outside in the snow.

You Did Send Me Dead Flowers

The product (aftershave balm) is soothing and pleasant. The scent reminds me of the dried flowers you'd find in a drawer of your grandmother's dresser, that you're cleaning out, after she'd passed...in the winter. There's a distinct hint of dust in the scent. Ideal time to use it: before your own funeral. It'll leave your skin soft and, yeah, that's it.

Powdering and Strong, Less Earthy than Expeceted

It's a nice scent, it is very powdery and not something which fades into the background quickly. I had expected it to be a little more "forest" smelling and I think it is a bit more, not floral, but bright smelling than I expected. To me, way more vetiver than elements with only fainter undertones of things like lichen/moss/fir. I wish those were more pronounced, not one of my favorites but still enjoyable.
