On June 1, 1926, Norma Jean Mortensen was born.

She survived a brutal childhood (12 foster homes and an orphanage), married young, then got a job working in a munitions factory during WWII, building rockets and bombs for the Radioplane Company. There, she met David Conover, an Army photographer who would change her life. Had she stayed in industry, she would have been a titan. In modeling, her next career, she would have been an icon.

Instead, she moved on to acting, and became Marilyn Monroe.

This Valentine's Day, we pay homage to the Blonde Bombshell herself, the most famous sex symbol of the 20th Century (and likely longer). Monroe famously wore a drop of Chanel No. 5 (and nothing else) to bed, but she also had a fondness for Patou Joy ("the costliest perfume in the world") and the now all-but-lost Floris Rose Geranium. All three were sexy, sensual, intimate things.

Facets of all three have made it into her namesake perfume.

Introducing Marilyn, our sprawling, baroque tribute to Monroe and her legacy. Blended with notes of amber, bergamot, cedar, clary sage, coriander, fir, labdanum, leather, opoponax, tonka, tobacco, sandalwood, vetiver, and ylang ylang, Marilyn is a powdery, cedary descent into what it means to feel stylish and sexy, capped with herbs and florals and underlaid by the promise of desire. Cast in the mold of Golden Age perfumery, the sort of fragrances that surrounded Monroe during her lifetime, Marilyn is the perfect representation of the impact she left behind, tuned for a masculine audience and perfect for the most intimate of company.

The best gourmand scent

Marilyn is my favorite gourmand scent. It's a lovely mix of notes and it's honestly super fun to share with when it's a precursor to a date.

This scent has a strong baby powder vibe to it , and is a bit more feminine than I would have probably gone with, but it does smell good and provides a nice shave. Clean, fresh and light.

This one is hard to make sense of, but I really do appreciate the effort. On one hand, the scent is light and pleasant. On the other though, it really reminds me of my Grandma when I was a kid which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Overall, I enjoy it but I think the sample size is perfect for me. It's light and has a strong powder scent.

The familiar with sophistication

When Marilyn beckoned, I was expecting something more floral and fragrant but once I smelled it I knew I was dealing with something more complex, subtle, but complex nonetheless. Right away it reminded me of another popular B + M offering, and no wonder once you start to connect the dots. Right off the block I detected a sophisticated, high-class fragrance reminiscent of a stately Hyannisport library full of classic books and amply stocked with Cuban cigars. Perhaps the connection is purposeful, as after Dougherty, DiMaggio, and Miller there were the Kennedys. Though I only ever got a sample of The Full Measure of Man, the memory of which was triggered, it is easily a scent I could add to my collection. Now, given the choice, I might add Marilyn instead for the subtlety of what makes FMoM what it is with an added note of sophistication.
