Bay Rum Shaving Soap

Way back in the glory days of salty sea dogs, sailors used rum tinctures of West Indie bay and spices as disinfectants, fragrances, deodorants, and aftershaves. Over time, many famous fragrance and shaving houses adopted the custom and offered their own versions of the classic scent, which proved to be extremely popular with barbers as well.

Barrister and Mann® is proud to offer our own version of a classic Bay Rum. Dispensing with the modern custom of using large amounts of clove, we instead blend real black strap rum with West Indie bay, sweet orange, cinnamon, and benzoin (a vanilla-like resin). Our Bay Rum is a warm, masculine classic, a piece of history, and a favorite for winter, but is well-suited for any time of year.

Wet your shaving brush well, then swirl it around the jar for roughly thirty seconds or until a rich, creamy lather is formed. Continue building the lather by adding water (lots and lots of it) and swirling your brush either on your face or in a lathering bowl. Shave, rinse, and spend your day feeling great.

Aqua (Water), Potassium Stearate , Glycerin, Potassium Tallowate, Parfum (Fragrance), Sodium Stearate, Gacinia indica seed butter (Potassium Kokum Butterate) , Polyacrylamidomethylpropane Sulfonic Acid, Cocos Nucifera Fruit Juice (Coconut Milk), Sodium Tallowate, Potassium Ricinoleate , Sodium Lactate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tetrasodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Xanthan Gum, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Seed Butter, Sodium Cocoa (Kokum) Butterate, Potassium Cocoate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Ricinoleate, Saccharide Isomerate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Sodium Cocoate, Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract, Ulmus rubra (Slippery Elm) Extract, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene

Customers praised this shaving soap for its excellent lather, slickness, and smooth shave performance. Most loved the classic bay rum scent featuring orange, cinnamon, and clove notes, calling it "the best" and "sublime." However, some found the scent too strong, sweet, or clove-heavy, with a few describing it as "cookie dough" or lacking authentic rum.

Try this Bay Rum, it won't disappoint. Just great!

I have only tried a few Barriter and Mann shave soaps and I really like them all. This Bay Rum soap is my favorite now, it took over the top spot from Sandalwood. The scent is pure luxury and the lather I get from it is incredible. Also, it has a nice slickness to it. I will be getting more of this when the time comes. Excellent product, Barrister and Mann!

B&M Shave Soap Over All Others

I’ve been using Barrister and Mann for quite a while, and despite trying plenty of other soaps, I seem to keep coming back to it. I recently picked up some Noble Otter, and since I really like a number of their scents, I was curious to spend some time with the soap itself.

Noble Otter is a very good performer. I get a comfortable, close shave from it without any real difficulty. I can also get the lather exactly where I like it—not too pasty and not too wet. The difference for me is how much soap it takes to get there. I find myself using considerably more Noble Otter than I do B&M.

That isn't necessarily a criticism of NO. It lathers well and does what it needs to do. But when I compare the two side by side, B&M still wins for me, particularly in protection and residual slickness. The slickness is important because I tend to do a fair amount of buffing, especially on my neck.

I usually do two or three passes every day. My shave also covers considerably more territory than just the usual face and neck. I go pretty high on my face, up to the tops of my cheekbones, and I shave above and around my ears as well. I keep the hair on the sides of my head extremely short, so I basically shave that area rather than leaving a conventional sideburn.

The neck gets a thorough treatment too. I shave well down the neck every day, and once or twice a week I'll take the shave even farther down and around the entire neckline, approaching the collarbone. On the final pass I do quite a bit of ATG buffing on my neck. That's probably where a soap's protection and residual slickness matter most to me.

B&M handles all of this extremely well. I can make multiple passes over areas that are shaved every day, while also going after areas that don't get quite as much attention, and the soap gives me plenty of cushion. I don't have particularly sensitive skin, but if a soap doesn't have enough protection or slickness, I can occasionally get a little burn. I don't have that problem with B&M.

My setup is pretty consistent. I use a scuttle every day because I like a warm lather, load my brush in the scuttle, and then face-lather. B&M is a thirsty soap, so I don't hesitate to keep adding water as I work the lather on my face. Once you get the water-to-soap ratio right, it produces the kind of dense, slick lather I want.

B&M remains my benchmark. For the way I shave—with multiple passes, extensive neck work and plenty of buffing—the cushion and slickness are hard to beat. At this point, I'd still put B&M at the top of my list as an all-around performer.

Simply perfect!

Simply perfect! The best shave soap I’ve ever used. Create a slick cream and not a foam which makes it not too bulky on the face. And the scent, just sublime!

What can I guy say

What can I guy say.
I did all the research I could. Even turned my personal AI assistant looses on the subject.
Will makes a fantastic product. I can’t remember the exact numbers but the good the bad and the ugly kinda went like this
The good: great smell, easy to work up. Slick as the devil. Leaves your “face” revitalized very refreshing.
The bad: Davidson is gonna loose a 50 year customer. If you have your form down use a good razor and blade. I used a 34c and Apache “one and done”. There’s no reason to sit o’l Hazel on your face anymore.
The Ugly: Impatient people. I’ve been lathering on my face for 50 years. The truth is. The heat.
Face, Bowel, Rag or Palm of your hand. You have to work ALL soaps. Time, Patience, Feel, Look. Look for that mother of pearl sheen. Mostly heat. People that are not patient complain.
I am very pleased and happy. Will does a fantastic job.

The lather is fantastic like all B&M soaps

The lather is fantastic like all B&M soaps. Never tried a bay rum, but I like this one. Smells like some oranges with spices.

Do you like cookie dough?

I just really dislike this version of bay rum. It smells like a weird cookie dough to me. No offense to Will but have you ever asked someone who isn’t a redditor what they think of some of these scents?!?

Of course, it’s b&m so if you can get past the scent being not so great, it does shave well, protects and coats your face, all that stuff

I love the formulation and how the shave soaps perform with this company but I think the scents leave so much to be desired.

Another Great Soap and a Great Scent

I feel like my reviews are getting repetitive. It's another great soap that lathers well and provides a great shave with an amazing long lasting scent. That feels par for the course for all of the Barrister and Mann products I've tried.

Very good bay rum, slightly sweet

The base is very good as most already know, it’s Omnibus.

The scent is slightly sweeter than I seek out in a Bay Rum normally, but I enjoy it thoroughly.

Like a Pirate, But With Better Hygiene

Barrister & Mann’s Bay Rum is what happens when pirates clean up and open a boutique. It’s spicy, warm, and just a little rowdy. Like a cinnamon stick that learned how to dance.

Now I’ll admit, I was half expectin’ this to smell like a holiday candle in a bar fight. But nope. It’s bold, smooth, and way more refined than your average grocery store rum splash. Smells like you’ve got a ship to captain and manners to uphold.

Lather? Rich and creamy. Like dessert for your whiskers. Slickness? Let’s just say my razor hydroplaned right through a three-day beard with zero complaints. Post-shave feel? My face felt like it just got off a Caribbean vacation with a towel folded into a swan.

If Bay Rum was a cologne, I’d wear it on purpose. As a shave soap, it’s already earned a spot in the front row. Grab it. Your face’ll thank you.
