An eerily smooth, smoky fougère with a distinctly “ashy” character and the dark cast of some ancient atrocity. Timelessly elegant and refined, Fougère Gothique is a fragrance for someone accustomed to the fruits of all-encompassing power. This rich, elemental scent features notes of black ashes, bergamot, lavender, cedar, sandalwood, geranium, leather, tuberose, burning wood, mushroom, oakmoss, tonka bean, vetiver, musk, and balsam fir absolute.

Net wt. 4 oz, Made in the USA

Wet your shaving brush well, then swirl it around the jar for roughly thirty seconds or until a rich, creamy lather is formed. Continue building the lather by adding water (lots and lots of it) and swirling your brush either on your face or in a lathering bowl. Shave, rinse, and spend your day feeling great.

A classic fougere with a shadowy beautiful twist

I’ve used a lot of fougère scents over the years, but Fougere Gothique by Barrister and Mann might be one of the most hauntingly beautiful takes on the genre I’ve ever experienced. This isn’t your typical barbershop fern. It’s dark, mysterious, and grounded in rich earth tones that give it an almost ritualistic feel.

The opening is unmistakably a fougère—green, herbal, and slightly sweet—but that quickly gives way to something much more brooding. There’s a deep forest floor vibe, like damp moss, loamy soil, and crushed ferns underfoot. It’s gothic in the truest sense—there’s a solemn beauty to it, like walking through an ancient woodland after rain. I pick up hints of incense, myrrh, maybe even something like old stone or cathedral dust in the base, adding a spiritual, timeless quality.

Performance, as expected from B&M, is stellar. Lather explodes with density and slickness, post-shave is luxurious, and the scent lingers subtly well after the shave—enough to enjoy without overwhelming.

If you love classic fougères but want something with real depth and a shadowy edge, Fougere Gothique is an absolute masterpiece. This is the scent I reach for when I want to feel connected to nature, history, and something just a little beyond the veil.

An olfactory masterpiece.

First, the Omnibus base is top tier and consistent across scents. It’s thirsty (accepting a lot of water) builds with ease, is slick with great cushion, and leaves your face feeling pampered post-shave.

Second, the Fougère Gothique scent is nothing short of a masterpiece. From cracking the tin, to allowing the notes to bloom while lathering, shaving, and taking in resonant aromatics hours later; this composition provides an olfactory odyssey.

I arrived in search of fruits and florals. I departed (overjoyed) with something I’d not previously encountered or imagined. This is a wonderful example of what the artisan environment is all about. I’m here for it.

This is the one

I consider myself very picky with fragrances..and this one is amazing. I really hope it will be restocked. It’s mysterious, dark, subtly bold..a unique and mesmerizing scent. The performance is incredible. Wish I discovered this one earlier.

Beautifully deep

This has become my favorite scent from B&M. This stuff is so deep in a wonderful rest. It reminds me of being deep in a mysterious forest. It's a fantastic contrast in my normal routine of Seville. It'll be a staple in my routine if they restock it.

The One Scent to Rule Them All…

I knew two things within seconds of opening the tub of Barrister and Mann’s Fougère Gothique Shaving Soap. That it would be my go-to shave on a rainy day, any time of the year but especially October through early April, and that it would be the soap, splash, and balm I use whenever I am in the mood to wear Guerlain Vetiver.

Fougère Gothique has a dark and mysterious depth that demands attention in the same way that The Floyd’s TDSOTM demands attention the moment you lower the tonearm. While loading the brush in the tub the scent fills the room like a slow-moving October thunderstorm before it lingers, broods, and evolves into something earthy, gently piney, and subtlety fresh-water aquatic while evoking the distant essence of damp and smoldering maple leaves. If autumn and its short, cool, contemplative days evoke a certain olfactory expression, it is to be found inside a tub of Fougère Gothique and the companion splash and balm. It’s the shave for the kind of day that leads you to open the aged Lane cedar chest and reach for a well-worn shetland wool crewneck, as if by instinct.

Fougère Gothique is a masterpiece, a complex and thoughtfully-balanced scent that makes stepping out into that frigid downpour, hook-handle umbrella praying to the heavens, a sensory experience to savor rather than bemoan.

I cannot think of a better performing or more comfortable lather for the gentle whisking away of facial hair using a dangerously sharp instrument than Barrister and Mann’s Omnibus base. But you knew that already if you dared read this far.

A stunning experience.

A very pleasant scent which is hard to describe

A very pleasant scent which is hard to describe. The shave was awesome. Don’t be afraid to soak your brush more than usual this soap is thirsty. I would have to say that the Fougere Gothique is among my top 5 favorites of shaving soaps.

Powerful Scent

Excellent lather, great scent. I find it lathers a little thinner than Muir Woods, but the scent can't be beat. No issues with my skin either. Big fan!

Hauntingly Gorgeous

When i first ordered this soap I wasn't entirely sure based off the description. Watched a few reviews on YouTube to see what the consensus was and it seemed everywhere I looked everyone was praising this scent so I finally decided to pull the trigger and buy both the soap and splash.

Oh my god...

This might be my new favorite B&M scent point blank period. The soap is more of an appealing smell than the splash but make no mistake the splash smells wonderful. For years id be looking for something to top their limited sandlewood run and this absolutely takes the cake

Wow!

Great lather, very protective, as with other B-M shaving soaps I have tried. But it’s the scent that’s out of this world. Love this one!

Very pleasant

I was expecting a much stronger scent. My order arrived today and this was the first one out of the bag, so to speak. The shave was, as always with Barrister and Mann, superbly smooth and close. I have sensitive skin, so that is no easy feat. This scent reminded me a little of Muir(e) Woods when I first smelled it, but it mellows out and is quite pleasant to use. I'm not sure how to describe the scent, but I definitely found myself enjoying it. I expected something stronger, like Ubrique, but I am really enjoying this one.
