The Scent

John Muir, for whom the famed national park "Muir Woods" is named, was a driven man. He loved nature so much that he crusaded for decades to preserve it, founding the Sierra Club and establishing national parks at Yosemite and the Sequoia National Forest, which inspired the conservation of other natural wonders all over the United States. He was so outspoken and persuasive that no less than Ansel Adams, perhaps the greatest nature photographer of the 20th Century, regarded him as a direct influence and inspiration for his work.

In keeping with Muir's love of the forests, we've attempted to capture the crepuscular gloom of the woods at dusk, all purples and greens and blues. Blackberry seemed a perfect choice to blend with the jammy resin of balsam fir, while oakmoss and vetiver lace the undergrowth, imparting earthy mossiness and wood. The scent of damp air, so common in the Pacific Northwest where Muir made his home, wends its way through the fragrance, leaving a hauntingly gossamer shimmer in its wake. Not so much as photorealistic fragrance as an inspired color impression, suffused with the indigo of the dusky woods, Mûir(e) Wood is a tribute to one of our great forefathers in a strikingly unconventional manner, a memorial to a man who went to live in Nature and only came back to tell us of the wonders he had seen. La mûre may be French for blackberry, but the man himself is the inspiration. His contemplative approach to the world, so reminiscent of our own wet shaving rituals, is best expressed in words to others:

"To sit in solitude, to think in solitude with only the music of the stream and the cedar to break the flow of silence, there lies the value of wilderness." - John Muir

QUICK NOTE:

Customers praised this shaving soap for its "extraordinary lather" and smooth, cushioned shave with excellent skin conditioning. The woodsy, damp forest scent with blackberry notes receives mixed reactions - most find it "amazing" and long-lasting, though some find it too sweet or chemical. Makes a great lather but the smells a little sweet for me

Like all B&M soaps it makes a great lather and is very smooth. The scent of this one does smell good but it's a little bit too sweet for my taste. It's still a solid shave soap with a good smell though.

The soap performs always. The muire is a pleasant scent but comes over as more blackberry rhan forest to my nose.

You‘re a magician!

I am sorry to be this blunt, but you designed another incredible fragrance here. When my son picked this from the samples I have, he commented (without seeing any descriptions online) that this smells like a damp Forrest at sunset.
I have nothing more to add. Amazing, long-lasting smell and the lather is as awesome as ever. Lasts a long time, too.

Although it lathers VERY WELL , to the point of ridiculousness. It shaves with a very nice cushion. Now being honest I felt like the description was awesome and honestly that’s why I chose Muir Woods. But in reality it was not to my liking. The scent reminded me more of a dusty masoleum than damp woods. But that being said that’s just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. I will definitely be purchasing other shaving soaps from B&M in future, as they have some Amazing Products!!

Solid Soap, just not my taste

Soap is great, easy to use, and does the trick. The most attractive part is its pungency. The smell is heavy and it makes my face smell great for hours after, but it’s not too overpowering. That being said the actual smell itself is not quite what I’m after. It’s certainly good, and has that “musky” aroma, but something about doesn’t match what I’m going for, so I’ll keep looking. However this experience makes me very excited about the brand. Thank you!

Berry Good!

Wasn't even planning on getting this, but read a lot of good things about it and decided to give it a try. It is very good and the blackberry smells amazing, it makes it very unique. Even if it's not the strongest note, the blackberry seems to be my favorite note of them all. I may have to get a full tub after the sample.

Great scent, great lather

Love the smell of this one. Like all Barrister & Mann soaps I've tried, it lathers excellently. I've tried this, Seville, and Fougere Classic. All have been excellent, but I think this is my favorite scent.

Wonderful woody fragrance

Great fragrance, a woody damp soil type vetiver with a small hint of blackberry. This needs to be a permanent addition in the line!

Mûir(e) Wood

The Omnibus base is phenomenal and is the best in business, period. The scent is a fresh and clean woodsy fragrance that makes me think of a forest after it rains. It is very nice, I do hope it becomes a yearly seasonal or added to their permanent lineup!

The Highlight Reel of Fougere Gothique

My very first thought when I read the description of this was, "Oooh, maybe a slightly fruity dirty version of Tiaga!" It's definitely not that. After opening the sample from Maggard, my very first thought was, "Holy Moses, this smells exactly like Fougere Gothique." But after several deep sniffs and a couple lathers, I don't think it smells exactly like Fougere Gothique. It smells like the highlight reel of Fougere Gothique. Basically, take away the funkiness of the mushroom and a few other notes that I wouldn't begin to try to identify, then add some non-overpowering, real, actual berry scent. I live in the PNW and pick blackberries for days on end when they're ripe. This sh*t is the bomb. My wife won't allow me to wear FG in the house so I only wear it golfing or working in the yard. This one, she likes.

A walk in the woods

This scent absolutely nails what Will was going for - it totally smells like a walk through the damp forest with a hint of blackberry in there. Performance is outstanding as always with omnibus and the scent is quite strong and long lasting. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars from me is I just don't like the scent on me. But, it is an excellent product and the scent is very accurately described!

Smell the fresh air

This scent accomplishes exactly what it intends. It is very fresh, woodsy, and natural. It's mid strength, with berry being the top note for me. What I like the best is the slickness it provides. I can't attribute it to the excellent omnibus base or this particular soap itself. But either way it's a definite winner. I tried this as a sample but, will definitely be purchasing it as a 4 ounce tub with the matching after shave in the near future. Another win for B+M!

It’s wonderful

When I first smelled it I wasn’t a fan, but I gave it a few days and smelled it again and it was great. Once I lathered it up it smelled even better. I’m glad I didn’t let the initial experience put me off. Definitely going to buy the full set.
